PHILADELPHIA (November 11, 2024)—Textile designs from Moore College of Art & Design’s (“Moore”) students and alumni will be featured in a pop-up exhibition at the National Liberty Museum, connecting Moore’s art and design students more closely to the Philadelphia art community.
The exhibition, titled Liberties Reimagined: Surrealism in Textile Design, is inspired by the National Liberty Museum’s “Year of Free Speech,” which opened in September 2024. The exhibition will be on view from November 15, 2024, through January 6, 2025, and is comprised of students from Moore’s “Drawing & Painting into Pattern” class. The exhibition was organized in part by interdisciplinary associate professor Heather Ujiie.
During this course, students were asked to create surrealist motifs around the subject of “liberty” and turn them into textiles. Students from across majors such as Fashion Design and Fine Arts developed new skills in mark-making, painting with water-based media, and digital tools to design these large-scale surface prints. After drawing, painting, and repeating images to create a pattern, students digitally printed their work onto fabric panels.
“Moore puts an emphasis on career development because we see the positive impact it has on students as they transition into their careers. Events like this incredible pop-up exhibition at the National Liberty Museum allow students to make new connections in the arts and develop skills that they’ll use in the future,” said Claudine Thomas, Chief Academic Officer, Moore College of Art & Design. “We are excited to partner with local institutions to give our students more opportunities that continue to expand their knowledge and their professional networks.”
