Moore College of Art & Design alumna Sarah Swanson MA ’17 was recently recognized as the 2026 National Art Education Association (NAEA) Peter J. Geisser Special Education Art Educator of the Year.

Presented in partnership with the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and the disability arts organization VSA, the award honors an educator whose teaching, leadership, research, service or scholarship has made distinguished contributions to art education for students with diverse abilities.

Swanson was selected for the award in recognition of her sustained impact on students with support needs and her ongoing contributions to inclusive art education. She accepted the award at the 2026 NAEA National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, in March.

It is a full-circle moment for me to receive this award,” Swanson saidMany years ago, I was a special education teacher assistant with a BFA in fine artstrying to figure out what career path to follow. I discovered Moore's Art Education graduate program and attended the Art in Special Education Symposium. Moore gave me an education that wasn't available anywhere else, and I am happy to pass on what I learned to current students.”

Lauren Stichter, director and associate professor of Art Education at Moore, described Swanson as a model of leadership in arts education.

“We are incredibly proud to see Sarah recognized with this national award. Her work exemplifies the commitment to access, equity, and inclusive arts education that defines Moore’s Art Education graduate program,” Stichter said.

Swanson, also an art educator at Green Tree School & Services in Philadelphia, joined Moore’s faculty in January 2025. She teaches Art in Special Education across the College’s undergraduate, graduate and post-baccalaureate Art Education programs. Moore’s Art Education programs prepare future educators through hands-on classroom experience, mentorship from practicing teachers and a strong focus on empowering students of all abilities.
