As Moore College of Art & Design welcomes the Class of 2028, a new mural designed by Illustration alumna Ryan Harris '24 and painted by first-year students is illuminating one of the College's beautiful courtyards.
The mural was created during Orientation and features Moore's tagline, "The World Needs Moore." Corrine Smith, Moore’s Director of Student Affairs, said the mural project brought new students together in a tangible way.
“Creating this mural was a great way to welcome first-year students, help them get to know each other and connect them with the rest of the Moore community. The piece brings vibrancy to this courtyard, the same way our first-year students bring such a vibrant energy to Moore’s campus,” Smith said. “We’re so excited to have so much artistic talent at Moore, from the alum who designed the mural to the new students who brought it to life!”
Lorelei Spletzer ‘28, a first-year Illustration student, said the experience helped her feel at home on Moore’s campus.
“Getting the opportunity to work on this mural during my first week at Moore not only made me feel welcomed but also gave me insight into Moore's culture,” she said. “Collaborating with other artists on this project and interpreting the mural itself helped me understand that Moore is dedicated to helping students flourish in both art and life. I’m ecstatic that I’ve finally found my community!"
After the mural was hung in the courtyard, President Cathy Young stopped by to see the piece in its new home and congratulate students on their hard work. Other student-made works, such as hand-painted cornhole boards, make the outdoor space one of Moore’s best and brightest.
