PHILADELPHIA (September 5, 2024)—Moore College of Art & Design (“Moore”) and ArtistYear announced their collaboration today to facilitate new opportunities for students, art educators and teaching artists. Together, Moore and ArtistYear aim to build greater capacity for arts programming for K-12 students to leave schools more “arts rich” and “arts stable.”

Starting in the fall of 2024, ArtistYear will invite Moore BFA alumni and graduate students to apply to serve as Resident Teaching Artists for one year and become Moore College Fellows. The first Moore College Fellows are already being placed in public schools for the 2024-2025 school year. Moore will also invite ArtistYear AmeriCorps Resident Teaching Artists to apply for its graduate and post-baccalaureate teacher certification degree programs during or after completing a service year.

“This exciting collaboration between ArtistYear and Moore College of Art & Design emerged from the success story of one of our Art Education graduates. Now, it’s opening new doors for all Moore graduates, as well as the dedicated teaching artists of ArtistYear, as they gain real-world experience by providing hands-on arts education in classrooms and applying innovative practices and techniques,” said Claudine Thomas, Chief Academic Officer, Moore College of Art & Design. “Together, we hope this relationship serves to bolster arts education in and around the Philadelphia area and develop the next generation of artists and designers.”

As part of this collaboration, students and educators accepted into either program will receive additional benefits meant to boost their access and credibility. ArtistYear Resident Teaching Artists who apply and are accepted into Moore’s art education graduate program will be awarded the ArtistYear Fellowship, which provides a $10,000 scholarship for those pursuing the MA in Art Education and a $20,000 scholarship for pursuing the MA with certification.

“ArtistYear has a rich history of collaboration with Moore College of Art & Design and we are excited to officially form a relationship starting this upcoming school year,” said Betsaleel Charmelus, Chief Executive Officer, ArtistYear. “It is becoming more vital than ever for established arts institutions to unite and navigate the future of arts education together. We look forward to combining our efforts to support arts education in Philadelphia and beyond.”

About ArtistYear

ArtistYear, the first national AmeriCorps program dedicated to the arts, exists to address inequities in K-12 education via a National Service Arts Corps. ArtistYear aims to democratize access to creative learning so all may reap the academic benefits, critical-thinking skills and social-emotional growth that come through creative engagement. ArtistYear trains and places AmeriCorps Resident Teaching Artists (RTAs) to commit a year of service to expand arts access within Title I school communities. RTAs work closely with their community to capitalize on schools’ existing strengths and resources along with community members’ interests to create arts initiatives suited to each school’s unique strengths and needs.
