PHILADELPHIA (June 6, 2025)—Moore College of Art & Design (“Moore”) and Philadelphia Sculptors will mark a milestone this summer with the 25th anniversary presentation of the sculpture exhibition 5 Into 1. For a quarter century, 5 Into 1 introduced the public to emerging sculptors from five of the city’s major art institutions: Moore, Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture, the University of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) and University of the Arts (UArts).
The Galleries at Moore will host the exhibition from June 14 to August 28, 2025. A free public opening reception will take place on Friday, June 13, from 5 to 7 pm, and will include a reading by Moore alumna Sandra Alexander ’92, winner of the Fitzgibbon Endowed Alumni Prize for excellence in arts writing. The reception will also honor Paul Hubbard, one of the founders of 5 Into 1.
This final iteration as a five-school collaboration offers both a celebration of the exhibition’s influential history and a chance to reimagine its future following the closure of UArts and the discontinuation of PAFA’s degree programs. Going forward, Philadelphia Sculptors will continue to support young sculptors from colleges across the Philadelphia region in a new format.
“For 25 years, 5 Into 1 has served as a launchpad for sculptors entering the field and a model of collaboration between art institutions in Philadelphia,” said Gabrielle Lavin Suzenski, Rochelle F. Levy director and chief curator of The Galleries at Moore. “This final iteration is both a commemoration and a pivot: honoring what we’ve built together while creating space for the future.”
Leslie Kaufman, president of Philadelphia Sculptors, said, “Many of the 5 Into 1 artists from earlier years continue to identify as sculptors and artists. They have become established and successful members of their art communities, fulfilling the promise revealed in their initial selections.”
Through a special three-part presentation, this year’s exhibition reflects on 5 Into 1’s legacy and highlights the breadth of sculptural practice that continues to thrive in the Philadelphia region:
-
New work from graduating sculptors: Artists representing each of the five institutions form a final cohort of emerging voices under the original 5 Into 1 banner.
-
Works of alumni who have previously participated in the show: Having earned BFA or MFA degrees from one of the five schools, these artists currently maintain sculptural or installation-based studio practices. These selections showcase the continuing evolution of contemporary sculpture in Philadelphia.
-
Moore’s Biennial Alumni Invitational: This portion features six Moore alumni who exhibited in 5 Into 1 at the time of their graduation: Carolina Marín Hernández ’22, Darla Jackson ’03, Aimee Koran ’13, Sarah Montagnoli ’18, Verónica A. Pérez ’14, and Kate VanVliet ’07. These artists now return with new work, underscoring the exhibition’s role in launching lasting creative careers and fostering a thriving community of makers.
Continuing the exhibition’s aim of identifying both emerging artists and emerging curators, five young curators have chosen this year’s artists: Patrick Cabry, Mandi Hall, Jacintha Kruc, Gage Ramos and Jaymi Vilardo.
The Galleries at Moore are free and open to the public, Monday through Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm. The Galleries are closed on Sundays and during all academic and regular holidays, including Saturday, July 2–Tuesday, July 5, in observance of Independence Day weekend.
