Sculptor and installation artist Michelle Lopez, whose immersive multimedia exhibition Pandemonium recently debuted at Moore College of Art & Design and The Franklin Institute, has been selected for the Whitney Biennial 2026.

Pandemonium combines video, animation, sound and VR to highlight themes of social upheaval, media saturation and environmental precarity. Premiere performances at The Franklin Institute’s Fels Planetarium also featured a 360-degree video of a tornado, with mechatronics designed in collaboration with Penn Engineering graduate students and faculty, as well as a live musical performance. The Galleries at Moore also presented selected sculptural works by Lopez and a projection of Pandemonium’s tornado film on a hovering disc.

Lopez is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, which supported the production of PandemoniumHer work has also been shown in galleries and museums in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New York City, Miami and Istanbul.

The Whitney Biennial is the longest-running survey of contemporary art in the nation, and the 82nd edition presents a carefully selected group of artists and collectives whose work reflects the complexities of today’s world. The exhibition, opening March 8, will highlight connections across social, technological, environmental and cultural systems.
