A Philadelphia loft once featured in the 1993 Oscar-winning film Philadelphia was given a fresh new look, thanks in part to the work of Moore College of Art & Design alumna Hope Velocette ‘10.

Velocette, who founded Velocette Studio in 2015, has created imaginative interiors for Philadelphia eateries such as Wilder and Oyster House, as well as commercial spaces like the real estate office headquarters for Philly Home Girls and HOUWZER. The Interior Design expert helped transform the Philadelphia set into a modern family home while preserving its cinematic charm.

The loft, originally occupied in the film by characters played by Tom Hanks and Antonio Banderas, was purchased in 2011 by Anthony Padilla and Sam Mink, owner of Oyster House. When they wanted to expand and update the space in 2022, they brought in Velocette, who collaborated with architect Sam Kim of Ambit Architecture to reimagine the home.

“As part of my process, it’s really important to name a feeling I want people to have as soon as they walk in,” Velocette told The New York Times. “For this project, I wanted people to walk in and feel lifted upward, almost like a cathedral effect.”

The renovation, which was completed in July 2024, blends industrial elements with elegant design touches, including a sculptural light installation and a 17-foot kitchen island in the 3,300-square-foot unit.
