Student Design Featured by Dock Street Brewery

This semester, seniors from the Illustration program competed in a label design contest for Dock Street Brewery, founded by Moore alumna Rosemarie Certo ‘78. The winning design from senior Illustration major Hadley Precht ‘25 is now featured on the brewery’s new “Zero Fox Given” Winter Red IPA.

Professor Collaborates with James Patterson on New Children's Book

Joe Kulka, associate professor of Illustration, recently celebrated the release of Fox is Coming!, the children’s book he illustrated and co-wrote with renowned author James Patterson. The book is available on Amazon, Target, and Barnes & Noble.

After picking Kulka’s 2007 book Wolf’s Coming! as a great illustrated picture book for his website Read Kiddo Read, Patterson personally reached out to Kulka to work with him on the project. To learn more, read our Faculty Five interview with Kulka here.

Alumna Publishes Graphic Novel

Illustration graduate Maria Sweeney ‘16 recently published her debut graphic novel, Brittle Joints, with Street Noise Books. Brittle Joints tells the story of Sweeney, who lives with Bruck syndrome, and the challenges she faces living with a progressive disability. Sweeney started the concept of her graphic novel while she was a student at Moore.

The novel earned stellar reviews from Publishers Weekly and Booklist. Watch Sweeney’s introduction to Brittle Joints below:

Student Work Accepted into Society of Illustrators Competition

Earlier this year, Art Education student Jada Lamboy '27 was accepted into the Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition for 2024.

The Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition is one of the most highly regarded opportunities for emerging illustrators, showcasing the exceptional work of students from top art and design programs in the United States and Canada. Lamboy’s submission, a self-portrait guided by Assistant Professor of Illustration Chris Williams, was one of 300 works chosen from 7,300 entries.

Lamboy, who created Self-Portrait for her Advanced Drawing Studio final, said the piece took more than 40 hours to complete over a month.

"I'm honored to have been considered for a place in the Society of Illustrators Student Competition. This may be one of my greatest accomplishments so far, and I'm very excited to be able to have this experience and opportunity," she said. "I wanted to make a piece that represented how I find comfort while experiencing life in college."

The competition’s winners were featured in the Student Scholarship Exhibit at the National Museum of American Illustration and in an online exhibition hosted by the Society of Illustrators.
