Joan Stevens, who served Moore for decades in many capacities, passed away on April 2, 2020.
Joan dedicated nearly her entire professional career to serving the Moore community, as a faculty member of the Liberal Arts Department, and later as Dean of Students until 2012. She then returned to teaching and remained a faculty member until her retirement last year.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Stevens was the fourth of five children. She earned a degree in French literature at the University of Pennsylvania, and got her PhD at Bryn Mawr College.
“Joan was one of the smartest people I knew," said Claudine Thomas, associate dean and director of institutional research. "She was a fierce advocate for young women, education and the arts. She led by example. She taught me how to work hard, and love with purpose."
"I will miss her immensely and I am forever grateful for everything she taught me about being a colleague, a mother, a daughter and a friend," she continued. "I am relieved she is at peace now. And every time I pick up a good book or watch my four children play, I will think of my friend Joan, and smile.”
Dr. Stevens is survived by her husband, James, and her four sons, their partners and six grandchildren, as well as two sisters and a brother.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a scholarship in her name at Moore College of Art and Design.
