Tatiana Young PhD
Adjunct Professor, Anthropology

Born and raised in Kyiv, Ukraine, Tatiana has always harbored a deep fascination for archeology and anthropology. After completing her undergraduate study in her hometown, she immigrated to the United States. Driven by curiosity about the collective past of human societies, she pursued a master's degree in Archeology from the University of Pennsylvania. She continued her academic journey by undertaking a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Temple University. Throughout her doctoral studies, she focused on unraveling the complexity of ancient Maya society, examining their socio-political structures, belief systems and material culture. In her free time, she enjoys silversmithing, leathercrafting, crocheting, hiking, camping and dancing.
Performing in the different historical venues such as Gream Park, Hagley Museum etc., being muse for the artist at Howard Pyle Studio, DE; Painter's Folly Studio in Chadds Fords
I create period costumes for performances at historic venues or to serve as inspiration for artists. These include those from the French court (Maria Antoinette style), which were also worn during the Colonial Period here, Victorian-era dresses featuring large hoop skirts, and Regency-era costumes reminiscent of Jane Austen style. I typically draw inspiration from museum artwork or exhibits depicting women in costumes from different periods.
I then researched the fabrics used during those times, including popular colors and corset styles. The corsets are very important because they define the silhouettes of chosen eras. I make them myself too. Next, I search for patterns or occasionally visit a museum to examine their collections. Many of the costumes I craft are hand-stitched to ensure period accuracy. While I strive for authenticity, I understand that complete accuracy is unattainable as the sewing industry, fabric production, etc, changed over time. Living history performances dances are typically held at historical venues such as Gream Park and the Hagley and many other places. These events feature dances and music that are more or less historically accurate. I sometimes serve as a model for artists at Howard Pyle Studio in Delaware, Painter's Folly Studio in Chadds Ford, and other locations.
