Artist Statement
My name is Natalie Rozvadovsky and I am an Illustrator based in North Carolina. Inspired by my lifelong appreciation and love of birds and the beauty of nature, I have decided to capture a few species of birds in their natural environments in an attempt to show how each one is exceptionally unique. The species captured in these pieces are the Brown-headed Cowbird, White-breasted Nuthatch, Northern Flicker, and Cedar Waxwing.
The Brown-headed Cowbird is a brood parasite named after their habit of following cows in order to eat the insects the cows stir up. The White-breasted Nuthatch is one of a few species that can hang both upside down and walk head-first down tree trunks using their strong legs and toes. The Northern Flicker is a woodpecker, but their behavior is atypical of most woodpeckers as they can often be spotted foraging for insects on the ground. The Cedar Waxwings are one of the few specialized fruit-eating birds and their diet is so fruit-heavy that invasive Brown-headed Cowbird chicks cannot thrive in a Cedar Waxwing nest.
As you can see, there is so much diversity and unique traits among different bird species and that is part of why these animals fascinate me so much. I hope with my thesis you develop a newfound appreciation and interest in the avian world and the feathered friends that fill our air with song.
