Artist Statement

Emily Shaw is a sequential artist based in Vancouver, WA. Her work in this field has ranged from re-interpretations of iconic literature, retelling exciting things that happened in her Dungeons and Dragons games, or deeply personal narratives; her senior thesis is an example of the latter.

For her thesis, Emily was interested in pursuing a storyboarding project that she wrote herself, inspired by her own life rather than existing prose. The specific memory she wanted to pull from is when she wrote her first "novel" with the direct collaboration of her close friends during the fifth grade. Emily wanted to explore themes of loss, escapism and the intensity of life experienced by children. While these seem to be heavy topics, her goal is to paint them in a positive light, as a fact of life that should be cherished.
