FOCUS ON: ALUMNAE AFTER-SCHOOL ART PROGRAM — BACHE-MARTIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

As part of Moore’s 160th Anniversary Celebration, alumnae volunteers taught an after-school art program at Bache-Martin Elementary School in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia. Moore’s art education majors designed art lessons under the direction of Lynne Horoschak ‘66, Chair of Art Education. Alumnae met with the children for one hour each week. Lessons encouraged creative thinking, explored different techniques and attitudes, introduced and built an art vocabulary and referenced art history. Lessons included: monochromatic painting, bookmaking and collage, maps, masks and puppets.

Documenting the nine-week collaboration between the Galleries at Moore College of Art & Design, Moore’s Art Education Department and New Freedom Theatre, a leading regional theatre and the oldest African American theatre and performing arts school in Philadelphia, the exhibition will include student artworks, video and photographs from the workshops and final performance. The interpretive movement and theatrical performance draws inspiration from concepts and imagery in the artwork of Moe Brooker, a nationally recognized African-American artist and Department Chair of Basics at Moore, whose work is inspired by jazz and gospel music.

Interior / Exterior includes images selected especially for the inaugural exhibition in the 56th Floor Gallery at Comcast. With the stunning, sky-high location in mind, the selection intermingles views of natural and man-made spaces, inner and outer worlds. Many of the images, like the bird’s eye position at Comcast, invite us to see the world around us differently. ALICE NEEL: DRAWING FROM LIFE

Alice Neel (1900 - 1984), a Philadelphia native and alumna of Moore College of Art & Design, is known for psychologically penetrating works that chronicle her life and times. The exhibition features a selection of portraits and still life spanning more than fifty years that examine drawing as the primary process in both her works on paper and paintings.

ROBERT GOODMAN: NET

Robert Goodman makes large-scale paintings that combine geometric swaths and lines of color built up with layers of paint on canvas overlaid with gestural brushstrokes. Navigating tensions between abstraction and representation, Goodman’s work conveys a layering and compression of time, space and place. In Net 2008, a new 28-ft painting, ebullient color appears to recede and advance into the web-like network of black and white lines creating a push/pull between color and space. The canvas pulses with the struggle between fear and optimism over the unraveling and potential collapse of stability and order.
PAMELA DEITRICH - CIRCUS TIME

Bright, colorful drawings of clowns, tigers and tightrope walkers will delight children of all ages in this exhibition titled Circus Time featuring works by Moore Alumna, Pamela Deitrich ‘70. The artist created most of the nine oversized paintings on paper during live performances at Big Apple Circus, capturing the excitement and energy of the experience through the use of dynamic line and vibrant color. Each image is presented with text - together, they are the basis of a forthcoming children’s book by the artist.

ON VIEW AT CBS: WORKS BY MOORE STUDENTS AND RECENT GRADUATES

In May 2007, CBS 3, The CW Philly 57 and Moore College of Art & Design teamed up to provide exhibition space at the TV stations' new HD Broadcast Center at 1555 Hamilton Street in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia. Artwork by current and recent Moore Bachelor of Fine Arts students is on view, year-round, in six highly visible exhibition spaces within the stations' 100,000 plus square foot headquarters. The work currently featured includes six Moore students from Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey: Timothea Canny, Rebecca Daddino, Jenni Deets, Chelsea Maymon, Nicole Pellino, and Trang Tong. The student works rotate on a six to nine month schedule.

Five Into One is an exhibit annually hosted by Moore and organized by Philadelphia Sculptors. This year the exhibition is curated by recent graduates of Tyler School of Art Joe DiGiuseppe and Chris Golas and features work by senior and graduate students at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Tyler School of Art, University of Pennsylvania, The University of the Arts, and Moore College of Art & Design.

COMMUNITY COLAB: ART IS AGELESS – A VIDEO DIALOGUE BETWEEN SENIORS AND STUDENTS

Community CoLAB: Art is Ageless, A Video Dialogue by Seniors and Students is an artistic collaboration between The Galleries at Moore, Moore College of Art & Design’s Art Education Department and residents of the Atria Senior Living Center, Philadelphia. The project is the result of a series of interviews conducted by Art Education majors at Moore with the residents, many who are former or current artists, designers and collectors-of the Atria Senior Living Center, neighbors of Moore College of Art & Design. The video presents a cross-generational dialogue between the residents and students who share experiences and memories from the vantage points of past and present artists and designers. It is a poignant and powerful testament to the power of art to build bridges across generations.
SURFACE TENSION

Featuring approximately fourteen multi-media works by Moore Alumnae that are united by the visual tension created by the artist's use of line, color, shape and/or form. Representing all majors and spanning graduation years from 1965 to 2007, the exhibition and its theme are designed to coincide with Moore's Annual Alumnae exhibition, TENSION, held at Moore this spring, expanding the show's concepts and extending opportunities for visibility for Moore Alumnae into the community. Drawn from the collection of internationally known Miami Beach collectors Dennis and Debra Scholl, IN REPOSE includes iconic figures, such as Janine Antoni, Mariko Mori, Catherine Opie, Pipilotti Rist, Carolee Schneemann and Cindy Sherman, whose photography, film and performance work from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s represents the historical context for much of the art in the exhibition. Also included are members of the current generation of artists, such as Tanyth Berkeley, Rineke Dijkstra, Trisha Donnelly, Naomi Fisher, Jenny Gage, Anna Gaskell, Kim Gordon, Katy Grannan, Melanie Schiff, Meredyth Sparks, Helen Van Meene, and Bettina Von Zwehl, who use traditional genres of self-portraiture, portraiture, narrative, and landscape to probe definitions of beauty, celebrity and notions of identity and its relation to the uncertain territory between adolescence and adulthood. ENCAPSULATED TIME: AGE, IMAGE AND ROCK ‘N ROLL

From intimate revelations about aging from anonymous 20 to 80-year old artists, composers, architects and writers, to teens singing songs from the ‘60s, Encapsulated Time features works that focus on the ways time is contained and defined by culture. The exhibition includes a new digital projection by Judy Gelles and a six-channel video installation by Andrew Suggs, both Philadelphia-based artists. Curated by Lorie Mertes, Rochelle F.
