IN CONVERSATION: MARK C. MARTINEZ & KEN LUM

IN CONVERSATION: MARK C. MARTINEZ & KEN LUM
Tuesday, March 3rd '15 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
MARK MARTINEZ

Join The Galleries at Moore as Temple professor Philip Glahn leads artists Mark C. Martinez and Ken Lum in a conversation about their mutual influences and inspirations.

Informed by the urban vernacular of Northeast Philadelphia, Martinez’s installation at The Galleries is a metafictional space where the constructs of cultural and personal identity are mined and challenged, and the politics of public and private space are played out. Martinez received an MFA in Painting from the Tyler School of Art (2014) and a BFA from the University of South Florida (2011). He lives and works in Philadelphia.

Ken Lum’s work explores expressions of cultural and subjective identity within the encoded parameters of economic, social, and political systems. Lum has been exhibited widely in both the U.S. and abroad, including the Whitney Biennial, Documenta 11, the IstanbulBiennial, the Venice Biennale and the Carnegie Triennial. He is currently Director of Undergraduate Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania.

Philip Glahn is Associate Professor of Critical Studies and Aesthetics at Tyler School of Art, Temple University. His teaching and research focus on socio-political engagement in the arts and the relationship between art, social formations, and the public sphere. An alumnus of the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program, he holds a PhD in art history from the Graduate Center, City University of New York.
