YAW Summer Program Information

  • Summer Session: July 8 – August 9, 2019
  • Classes are Monday to Friday 9 am – 4 pm
  • Students have morning and afternoon breaks as well as supervised lunches for which they may bring their own or purchase in the dining hall.
  • Choose according to your Fall 2018 grade

Young artists in Classes for Grades 6 – 8 experience a joyous investigation into a wide range of visual art materials, techniques and ideas. Courses foster a broad understanding of the art and design process and provide a springboard for creative thinking and artmaking.

5-WEEK TRACK OPTIONS
Enrolling in a track offers a great opportunity to sample the mixture courses as listed (no substitutions) in five weeks of summer fun. Track tuition is $2120, a SAVINGS of $530 over individual course registrations.

ONE-WEEK COURSES
Our program format allows for flexible weekly course options for busy summer schedules.  You can enroll for one week or any combination of weeks.

Animation

Design your own characters and learn how to bring them to life through animation. Projects involve being introduced to the concept of the frame (animation's most basic unit), how it turns into a cycle, then a sequence and finally, a story. As you discover the technology that makes it all possible, you will build a foundation in animation techniques and begin to develop your personal style. 

Anime & Manga

Explore Japanese comics and print cartoons and learn the steps of making anime and manga.  Advance your drawing skills by focusing on traditional anime and characteristics of facial expression, the figure and creative costumes. 

Creating 3D Small Metals

Design small sculptures and jewelry and see your creativity come to life in this metals studio class. Learn basic metalsmithing and the safe use of tools as you solder, saw, file and more to create your artwork and strengthen your design skills. This class is open to all experience levels. 

Creating Characters in Clay
Course Code: YIL031

Colorful and easy to work with, polymer clay is an ideal material for sculpting figures and faces. In this character design sculpting course, students pull and push the plastic material and cure it with low-temperature baking that allows for painting or more complicated assembly. Receiving step-by-step instructions, students will learn to create three-dimensional cartoons and caricatures of different kinds of figures. 

Digital Photography

Learn the basic techniques for making good photographs with a focus on portraits. The course will cover camera use, composition, exposure, basic lighting, camera care, and editing of digital files. You will be encouraged to practice formulating ideas in order to make portraits of your friends and family that say something interesting about them. Optional: Take this course as part of the five-week Fine Arts Track and save $545!

Drawing & Painting Philadelphia

Develop your drawing and painting skills as well as an appreciation for the richness of Philadelphia’s landscapes with visits to arts and cultural sites. Pencil, charcoal, watercolor and more will be provided for creating initial sketches and expanding into formal drawings and paintings in the studio.

Expressive Painting

Discover the creative possibilities of color and paint for expressing ideas, stories and images of the world around you. Have fun experimenting with mixing colors, brushwork and composition and be introduced to famous artworks as inspiration for your own compositions. Emphasis will be on the effects of color in painting with the application of acrylic paint. 

Fantasy Illustration

Focus on transforming ideas into creative artwork through a variety of exciting illustration projects that include comics-related subjects, science fiction themes and fantasy landscapes. Emphasis is on exercising the imagination, using writing to enhance fanciful scenes, and experimenting with different materials and techniques. 

Intro to Digital Art

Explore the magic of digital imaging as a tool for art and design while learning the basics of visual expression and communication.  Drawing directly on a Cintiq monitor, you will use the Adobe Creative Suite to develop digital art designs for business cards, posters, blogs and more. No experience is necessary to take this course. 

Intro to Figurative Drawing

Explore proportion, form, composition and value while developing your observational drawing skills.  This is an essential course if you are interested in pursuing fashion, fine arts, illustration, sculpture and other art fields.  Students will draw from a clothed model and work in graphite, charcoal and Conte crayons.
