YAW Spring Program Information

  • Spring Session begins February 9 – April 13, 2019
  • Classes are Saturdays from 9 – 12 pm and 1 – 4 pm
  • Students have morning and afternoon breaks as well as supervised lunches for which they may bring their own or purchase in the dining hall.
  • Choose according to your Fall 2018 grade

Young artists in High School Classes become part of a community dedicated to developing interests and abilities in a collaborative and exuberant atmosphere. In addition to building a foundation of creative and technical skills, courses foster the development of imagination, self-confidence, and individual style.

DIGITAL ANIMATION

Make the transition from traditional hand-drawn animation techniques to the digital world. A continuing emphasis on concept and character development and storyboards will strengthen student skills. A great next step if you have taken traditional animation classes in the past. 

DIGITAL MAGIC

Discover the secrets of digital wizardry that professional artists use to alter source material, such as photographs or scanned artwork. You'll create original work from preexisting sources and then, using the clever tools found in Adobe Photoshop, produce amazing artwork including photography, posters and more.

DRAWING FOUNDATION

Develop the perceptual and pictorial skills that will further your art and design abilities. You will learn vital concepts of line, value, gesture, composition and perspective through basic drawing techniques and materials while experiencing the fun and satisfaction of drawing.  

FASHION CONCEPTS & ILLUSTRATION

Develop a visual fashion collection through the exploration of history, trends and fashion designers. Start with a sketchbook to express your ideas and then learn to illustrate the traditional fashion figure to create collection boards and finished portfolio pieces.

You will have fun exploring different approaches to fashion design along with developing skills in styling, fabric selection, creating inspiration boards and professional draping techniques. You will learn how garments can communicate an individual’s personality and gain an understanding of style, color, form, and proportion in contemporary fashion.
 

FASHION STYLING

Discover the ins and outs of the exciting career of being a fashion stylist.  Learn how to style using color, shape and proportion; identify fashion trends and resources; and develop a personal aesthetic. Individual and group projects, including mood/style boards, will give you the opportunity to apply your styling skills in the interpretation of fashion image for a range of applications within the field of fashion.

Develop strong composition skills and learn to capture the essence of a pose through interpreting the human figure. Short sketches will lead to longer poses and the development of more complete, detailed drawings as you increase your observational skills and understanding of proportion, form and gesture.  Tuition includes model fee.

GAMING DESIGN

Learn design and game development! Through concept sketching, animation and basic programming skills, you will build simple interactive frames. Hands-on projects explore specific game genres including arcade, action and narrative games. Programming experience is not necessary, but you should be computer literate and have some familiarity with Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.

This dynamic class will introduce you to illustration skills and develop your personal style in creating imaginative visual images for the types of projects that contemporary illustrators practice: comics, children’s books, movie storyboards, skateboard graphics, video games and more.

Learn the foundational techniques of painting in a light-filled studio as you explore color and composition to express your ideas about art. Using a range of paint media, you will develop an understanding of the relationship between color and light as you work from observed subjects such as still life and the figure or your imagination

Bring your sketches to life using traditional animation techniques for designing unique characters and fascinating visual narratives. You will have fun experimenting with 2D animation as you strengthen your perception and drawing skills. Focusing on the foundation of animation, the course will take you through the initial steps of storyboarding so you can become skilled at developing your ideas into a story plot with both words and images. 

URBAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Explore a variety of city sights and learn the techniques, skills and principles for finding and capturing life as it happens and telling stories with images. Students should bring a digital camera to the first class.
