Fall 2018 & Spring 2019

Young artists in Classes for Grades 6 – 8 experience a joyous investigation into a wide range of visual art materials, techniques and ideas. Courses foster a broad understanding of the art and design process and provide a springboard for creative thinking and artmaking.

  • Classes are Saturdays from 9 – 12 pm and 1 – 4 pm
  • Students have morning and afternoon breaks as well as supervised lunches for which they may bring their own or purchase in the dining hall.

* ANIMATION WORKSHOP

Learn the visual art of creating the illusion of motion by developing your own short animation. The fundamentals of concept development, character design, and storyboards are explored as you make artistic choices to bring simple images to life. Discover how to establish pace, energy and timing as you develop your individual style of drawing and transform your ideas into cinematic action.

CARTOONING & CHARACTER DESIGN

Learn the skills needed to develop your own five-page book inspired by cartoons found in illustrated books and animated films. This class covers character design, figure invention, page layout, story structure, basic rules of perspective and classic comic book storytelling. Familiarize yourself with the process a comic artist goes through from thumbnails to a beautifully finished page. 

DIGITAL ART & WEB DESIGN

Gain digital design fundamentals through the use of the Adobe Creative Suite and Wacom tablets while learning how to build your own dynamic website. Programming experience is not necessary.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Learn the basic techniques for making good photographs of many kinds including portraits, landscape, and cityscape.  This course will cover camera use, composition, exposure, basic lighting, camera care and editing of digital files with Photoshop. You will be encouraged to practice formulating ideas in order to make interesting photos to share with family and friends.  Bring a digital camera to the first class.

This class will focus on building basic drawing and painting skills along with developing art concepts.  Various subjects including still life, interiors, and cityscapes will be explored. Projects will delve into the formal elements of art, such as line, space, scale and texture. Materials will include pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, and acrylics on paper and canvas.

Study the basic elements of fashion design as a background for your drawings. Learn about trends, events, and designers in the world of costume and fashion. Instruction will include how best to illustrate your ideas inspired by various cultures and their clothing styles.

Focus on transforming ideas into creative artwork through a variety of exciting illustration projects that include comics-related subjects, science fiction themes and fantasy landscapes. Drawing the human figure is important training for all artists. By working with a clothed live model, you will develop an understanding of form through increased observation skills. This class offers a good foundation in the basics for beginners and more experienced students.
