Artists and collaborators Mary Smull and Chris Powell team up to present The Loomstrument – a hybrid loom and music synthesizer that fuses textile and sonic design through performance. For the first time ever during this Bodyworks performance, Smull and Powell will present the sounds of their invention during a Loomstrument concert with special guest artists and musicians.

Mary Smull is a Philadelphia-based artist working with textile as object and action. She uses textile processes to expose the diversity of attitudes toward labor and the complex relationships surrounding art and craft, amateur and professional, producers and consumers.  Recently, Smull’s work has been exhibited at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia International Airport, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Temple Contemporary, Bridgette Mayer Gallery, Philadelphia, PA, and at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Public Fiction Gallery in Los Angeles, CA, Racine Art Museum, Racine, WI, and Cranbrook Museum of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Christopher Sean Powell (aka Pow Pow) is a self-taught rhythm scholar, producer, and beat-maker living in Philadelphia, PA.  As a main contributor in the Philadelphia art and sound collective Need New Body, which fused improvisation with popular song structures, Powell began a career of international recording and performance, creating music at the nexus of art and entertainment. Since 1999, he has collaborated, recorded, and toured worldwide with a diverse spectrum of artists and musicians, including the Sun Ra Arkestra, Yoko Ono, and the Boredoms. Powell’s work in the eclectic and high energy Philadelphia band Man Man (ANTI- Records) has helped focus his talent as a leader in the live performance context.  Together with Griffin Rodriguez, Powell explores popular music based on jazz and non-Western rhythms as the Los Angeles production duo Icy Demons.  His latest projects include Adventuredrum, a conceptually-based performance Powell composes for an ensemble of drummers, GRANT$, a hip hop duo with artist Tim Fite, and Loomstrument, a collaboration with textile artist Mary Smull in which we transform a Macomber Loom into an expressive electronic musical instrument.
