About the Initiative 
Moore College of Art & Design is committed to providing students with the resources necessary to achieve the highest level of excellence in their chosen field. Moore is therefore making a major investment in a new laptop/wireless initiative to expand access to digital technologies essential for today's professional artists and designers. At Moore, we believe that a laptop computer is an essential tool for educating women for careers in art and design. Therefore, Moore requires all new BFA students to purchase laptop computers prior to the start of fall classes.

Moore highly recommends that students choose to purchase an Apple Computer laptop, the preferred tool of most artists and designers.  However, students intending to major in Interior Design should consider purchasing a ThinkPad (PC), as AutoCAD software is not currently written for the Macintosh (Apple) operating system.  Please be sure that the software you purchase is the correct version for your platform (Macintosh or PC).

While many Windows PC laptops come with a three year service / support contract, Apple Macintosh laptops do not. Moore highly recommends purchasing an Apple Care three year service / support contact if you are purchasing an Apple laptop.


All first year students are required to purchase an Adobe Creative Cloud Membership. All students choosing to purchase a Windows laptop will also be required to have Antivirus software. Moore College is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) who has partnered with JourneyEd to offer software packages at a tremendous discount.

All Transfer Interior Design students enrolling in sophomore level courses must have the following programs:*

  • AutoCad
  • Photoshop
  • SketchUp
  • Podium

Autodesk offers free downloads for most of their products to anyone with an edu email address. Once your email account is sent to you, you can go to to register and download the software. Autodesk includes AutoCad.

Free versions of SketchUp and Podium can also be downloaded. SketchUp Pro can be obtained for free by students with a set of codes that SketchUp gives to instructors. So, there is no need for you to purchase a full version of the program. The free version of SketchUp can be downloaded at after your instructor gives you the codes.
There is a free trial version of Podium that you can download at This trial version limits the size of the renderings useful for getting familiar with the program. You can purchase the full version when you take the course where Podium will be used. 

Photoshop is included in the Adobe Creative Cloud.

*Note: these programs are not required for incoming first-year students.


To help reduce the costs of this initiative to students and families, the College has negotiated special pricing with Apple Computer, Inc. (for Moore-recommended Laptop Systems**), Lenovo (ThinkPad), and JourneyEd, for software.  All Moore students, faculty and staff are eligible for Moore discounted rates. Most hardware and software discounts are only available through Moodle.  However, the College has also arranged for hardward discounts for Macintosh systems only at the Penn Computer Connection, located at 3610 Sansom St, Philadelphia, PA, o the University of Pennsylvania's campus (215-898-3282). Software should still be purchased online through, for the greatest discount.

Instructions for Moodle Log-in and purchasing discounted hardware and software online:
1. Go to
2. Click on “Resources For" top right corner of the homepage and select " Current Students"
3. Click on “Moodle Login”.
4. Enter your login ID and password in the left panel and click “log in”.
5. Once logged in, you can navigate to “Campus Community” and select the “Computer Services” community.
6. Open the “Computer Purchase Program” document and follow the links to preferred pricing from Apple, Lenovo and JourneyEd.

Please note:  To purchase software at the special discounted rate from JourneyEd, the website will ask for proof that you are a Moore student.  New students may submit their acceptance letters for this purpose.
