College Announces Internship Fellowships for all BFA Students

(Philadelphia, PA) With the enthusiastic support of the Board of Managers and Trustees, Moore will award a $1,000 Paid Internship Fellowship to each junior for her 240-hour required internship, typically during the summer of her junior year. This initiative begins with this year's junior class.

"Moore's paid internship fellowships for all bachelor of fine arts students is an important part of the College's promise to educate and prepare women for careers in art and design," says Arthur Block, Chair of the Board of Managers. "Internships are a proven way for college students to gain critical skills for job readiness. We felt it important to back up the requirement with a Paid Internship Fellowship that will help insure each student the kind of experience that will help her meet her career goals."

Twenty-five percent of Moore students work full-time in addition to carrying a full class load. Since some internships are unpaid, the Paid Internship Fellowships can be an added financial strain.

"This initiative largely builds upon the success of this summer's Knight Internship Fellowships, funded through a one-time grant from the Knight Foundation," says Moore President Happy Fernandez. "The idea for the Paid Internship Fellowships came about as the result of feedback from student leaders, staff and faculty during the ongoing strategic College-planning process."

"Our goal at Moore is to deliver academic excellence as we prepare students for careers and life-long learning in the visual arts. In doing so, it is imperative that we do everything we can to look carefully at the student experience and the unique pressures students are under."

The goal of the Paid Internship Fellowships is to give Moore students an edge in the highly competitive internship market and in their career preparation.

Research shows that employers want to hire and retain employees who are good problem solvers, have a strong work ethic, are determined to achieve, have teamwork and leadership skills, and are passionate yet flexible. To prepare Moore graduates to be ready to contribute and succeed in today's workplace, the required internship, paired with the services offered through the Locks Career Center, gives Moore students every advantage and the tools to apply critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving that they are learning in the classroom to workplace situations.

Next summer, as students confirm with the Career Center that they have begun their internship, they will receive the first $500 of the Paid Internship Fellowships. They will receive the final $500 of the Internship Fellowship following confirmation that they have successfully completed their internship hours.

In the spring semester, during the required Internship Preparation course, the Career Center will provide students with additional information about this process. Current Art Education BFA juniors will be eligible for this Internship Fellowship during the required student teaching placement begun and completed in spring 2011.
