PAFA Collection Features Work by Moore Artists

The Female Gaze: Women Artists Making Their World, Linda Lee Alter’s collection of art by women on view at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, has several Moore connections.

The exhibition, 25 years in the making, features the work of Alice Oh, associate professor of fine arts; American artist Alice Neel, Moore’s most famous alumna; and two recipients of Moore’s Visionary Woman Award, feminist artist Judy Chicago and educator, painter, quilt artist and author Faith Ringgold.

In a November 25 Philadelphia Inquirer article about the collection, “Wealth of work, all by women,” writer Edward J. Sozanski said Neel’s “full-body nude portrait of a pregnant friend, Claudia Bach, posed as an odalisque, defines a genre no male painter could hope to equal, even in the unlikely event one was drawn to the subject and brave enough to tempt it.”

The nearly 500 works in a variety of media were given by Alter to the academy two years ago. The exhibition is up through April 7, 2013. Read more about the collection here
