TEACHERS SUMMER INSTITUTE 2008

ART IN THE SOCIAL SPHERE
The Transformative Power of Art
Sunday, June 22 – Thursday, June 26, 2008

• How does art transform beliefs about social issues?
• How can art affect identity and community development?

In a program designed for art teachers and those who integrate art in to other disciplines, participants explore how art influences change within individuals and groups. Distinguished professionals lead panel discussions, studio workshops, and field trips.

Special opportunities at Spiral Q Puppet Theatre, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and site-specific installations look at how multi-sensory encounters expand reality and contribute to empowerment, meaning making, and identity.

Studio workshops involve creating art while generating ideas and exemplars for classroom use. Projects are appropriate for beginner through advanced levels.

Program Director: Lynne Jordan-Horoschak, Chair of Moore’s Art Education Department, is an award winning art educator sought after for her expertise in integrating visual arts into school curricula. She has taught at Temple University and in the Philadelphia Public Schools System. A painter, her work is currently exhibited at Hope Horn Gallery of the University of Scranton.

Lead Presenter: Matthew Hart, founder of Spiral Q Puppet Theater (a grass-roots organization dedicated to mobilizing communities and empowering people), is the National Director of Public Engagement at Solutions for Progress. He was on the Directors Team for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies 2004 in Athens, Greece.

Workshop Leader: Martha Gelarden, Visiting Artist at Moore, is involved in a sculptural practice based on questioning current events, human condition, cultural identity, history, and politics. Presentations include the 2006 International Conference on the Arts in Society (Edinburgh, Scotland) and Generative Art 2005 (Milan, Italy).
