COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Digital Photography
Discover the basics of shooting, manipulating and printing your digital photographs. Students first learn about the settings and functions of their digital cameras, as well as the basic techniques of shooting digital photos. Each Saturday, class participants will photograph various subjects and review each other’s images. Using scanners and Adobe Photoshop, you will import your images into Macintosh computers and learn the endless possibilities for creating special effects before printing. Finally, you will print your images in both black and white and color using state-of-the-art printers. Group discussion and one-on-one instruction are provided to meet the specific needs and experience level of each student. *Studio fee $40

Introduction to Sculpture
Express your ideas in three dimensions. In this course, students investigate the special skills and challenges involved in creating artful objects that can be viewed from all sides. Working with a variety of materials and techniques, you will learn visually interesting ways to make use of space, mass, light and shadow while exploring design elements such as shape, form, line and texture as they relate to specific visual functions. Students create a final project in their own area of interest.
*Studio fee $40

Painting from Nature
Using the natural world as inspiration, gain skills in realistic rendering through exploring techniques for depicting an object’s form, structure, texture and pattern. Demonstrations and hands-on exercises encourage experimentation with colored pencil, watercolor and acrylic. Projects include learning how to choose, mix and apply color and how to exploit lighting to heighten the realistic qualities of such objects as plants, birds and animals. Students will increase their sensory awareness, confidence in basic artmaking skills and understanding of composition in order to create more complex and expressive works of art.
*Studio fee $40

Visual Storytelling
Explore ways of creating visual images that communicate new ideas. Projects focus on tools and techniques used in the field of illustration to build and tell a narrative such as sketching, thumbnails and storyboards. You will learn the fundamentals of creating pictures in sequence, visual symbols and narrative technique and, in the process, develop technical and artistic skills. Bring your imagination to class–experimentation and fun are emphasized.

Figure Drawing
Develop strong observational skills and learn about composition and proportion through interpreting the human figure, the traditional prerequisite to all visual disciplines. Through a series of creative exercises, you will investigate new ways of seeing and drawing the figure using a variety of drawing media. The unclothed model allows for the study of gesture, as well as skeletal and anatomical structure. Students will learn how to capture a pose with quick gestures, develop a quality of line with contours and solve foreshortening problems by understanding aspects of perspective. Short drills will lead to long poses and the development of more complete, detailed drawings. Note: This class uses both nude and clothed models.
*Model fee $40

Philadelphia Sketchbook
Explore Philadelphia’s history and culture by sketching the landscape, architecture, people and happenings. Possible sites include the Italian Market, Penn’s Landing, South Street, Washington Square, Reading Terminal, the Rodin Museum and Philadelphia Museum of Art. Emphasis is placed on experimentation and creativity, using a variety of materials and collage. Students may expand upon their sketches to create larger in-class drawings.
Students will gain valuable instruction on composition, perspective, materials and arrangement.

Portfolio Preparation
Develop your drawing skills and fine-tune your portfolio in preparation for college. Engage in observational drawing using a variety of media and mark-making techniques. In addition to basics, discover ways to develop more expressive work through the manipulation of color, light and composition.

Introduction to Sewing: Level I
Uncover the basics of fashion design and garment construction by learning fashion terminology, hand-sewing techniques, reading and understanding patterns and fashion illustration. This class is a great first step for students interested in fashion design, but who are not experienced at sewing. Students will gain confidence in their sewing skills and learn fashion industry information, enabling them to enroll in higher levels of YAW Fashion Design & Construction classes.

Introduction to Sewing: Level II
Learn more advanced hand-sewing techniques and fashion terminology, review more complicated patterns and create fashion illustrations with greater agility and detail in the second level course. This class is for students who want to go beyond basics to tackle complex levels of design and fabrication and is recommended for the higher levels of YAW Fashion & Design Construction classes.

Handbag Design
Design and create unique handbags with fabrics and materials of the student’s choice incorporating pre-fabricated handles, clasps and interesting trims. Conceptualize, design, sketch, draft patterns and construct bags using basic machine and/or hand sewing. Sources for fabric and trim materials, helpful sewing hints and techniques will be covered. Note: Some basic knowledge of machine or hand sewing is helpful.

Three-Dimensional Design: Small Metals
Learn tools, materials and techniques related to three-dimensional design with an emphasis on jewelry and small metals. Students will learn forming and joining skills to transform ideas into three-dimensional pieces. Technical information combined with creativity will allow students to design pieces that are uniquely their own. All skill levels are welcome in this class. *Studio fee $40
