How old is Moore?
Moore College of Art & Design was founded in 1848 by Sarah Worthington Peter. A Philadelphia artist and philanthropist, Sarah Peter endeavored to create a school for women to learn textile arts, which was a key industry in Philadelphia during that era.

Moore is the only women’s art and design college in the country.  What are the advantages of attending a women’s college?
At Moore, women are encouraged to express their opinions and develop their leadership skills.  They also become connected to a network of women artists and designers that serves them throughout their professional and personal lives. The creative and intellectual support Moore offers enables students to take constructive risks, develop their individuality, and set higher goals.  They enter their careers having developed greater self-assurance and self-esteem.

What is Moore’s campus like?
Moore is located in the heart of Center City, Philadelphia, along the Ben Franklin Parkway, which is well-known for its many museums, including The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Rodin Museum, The Franklin Institute, and the Academy of Natural Sciences.  Just outside Moore’s entrance is the famous Swann fountain, designed by sculptor Alexander Calder in 1924.  Fairmount Park is also close by, as is the Schuylkill River and Kelly Drive, where you will find rowers, bikers, joggers, and in-line skaters enjoying the outdoors on sunny days.
Our campus buildings, including Sarah Peter Hall, Wilson Hall, the Galleries at Moore, and Main Residence, are all interconnected and easily accessible from the Parkway between 19th and 20th Streets.
See Directions for a map of the area.
