MFA in Interior Design

The Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design emphasizes the development of creative and research-based interior design in the service of human needs within the greater social and environmental context.  To reflect this, most studio projects are the adaptive reuse of buildings that students can visit and include the needs of various types of clients for students to consider.

The degree is for those with an undergraduate degree in a field other than interior design and serves those who are changing careers.  The program is 9 terms (3 years) and an introductory 6-week intensive.  The courses are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday, so that students can meet curricular demands while employed.

The special departmental events each year include Design Day and the Design Forum.   Design Day is a short, team project for a real client and can be anything from flexible furniture to a disaster shelter and includes service-learning projects.  The annual Design Forum topics also address the effects of design on the community and include local and national experts in the topic area.

The program includes a required internship to provide valuable work experience in the field.  It culminates in the thesis project which includes research, programming and design of a project chosen by the student.  The thesis is presented to a jury of professional interior designers and faculty and to the public in the graduate thesis exhibition in The Galleries at Moore.
