(Philadelphia, PA) Dona Lantz, Dean of Academic Affairs at Moore College of Art & Design, is
pleased to announce several recent appointments to Moore’s new coed Graduate
Programs: Elaine Crivelli has been appointed as Director of Graduate
Studies; Mark Karlen, PhD, has been appointed the Interior Design Graduate
Program Manager; Lynne Horoschak, professor and BFA Art Education chair, has been
named as the Art Education Graduate Program Manager; and Paul Hubbard,
professor and BFA Fine Arts chair, has been named as the Studio Art Graduate
Program Manager. Professor Hubbard and Professor Horoschak’s new
appointments will start full time June 1, 2009.
Elaine brings to her appointment a multidisciplinary breadth in
university, undergraduate and graduate, and secondary level teaching,
administrative experience as chair of two art departments, gallery director
and curator; international work experience and coordinator of study trips to
Italy, Belgium, France, England and Scotland.
As a professional artist she practices digital photography and has exhibited
extensively both nationally and internationally. Her most recent one-person
exhibition was at the Fleming Gallery at TASIS, the American School in
England in Surrey, England where she was also a Visiting Artist. She is an
active member of the College Art Association, the National Art Education
Association and the Society for Photographic Education. From 2006 to 2007
she was a volunteer board member for the Women's Health and Environmental
Network here in Philadelphia. Crivelli received her MFA from the University of
Delaware in sculpture.
Mark Karlen, Ph D
For the past two years, Karlen has served as a faculty consultant
to develop curriculum for the new Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design
program. He joined Moore full time on August 18.
Previous to this appointment, Karlen was professor and former Chair of
the Department of Interior Design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.
While at Pratt Institute, Karlen managed graduate level directed
research and thesis projects. His current research efforts include
developing a supplement focusing on stair design for the third edition of
his book entitled Space Planning Basics, which will be published in 2009. He
also is co-authoring a book focusing on photo-realistic digital imaging of
lighting design solutions, which is scheduled for publication in 2010.
Karlen is a regular reviewer for the Council for Interior Design
Accreditation (CIDA) evaluations and a STEP Workshop Leader for the American
Society of Interior Designers (ASID) in preparing young professionals for
the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination.
Dr. Karlen received his PhD in architectural history from The Union
Institute, Cincinnati, OH. His dissertation subject was the use of exterior
color in Western architecture. In addition, he continues to informally
research the mass/void relationship in architecture.
Since 2000, Paul has been a Professor and Chair of Fine Arts at
Moore. Prior to his appointment at Moore, Professor Hubbard taught at
Goldsmiths School of Art in London from 1975 to 1998. From 1983 to 1987, he
also taught as a Visiting Artist in the Walsall School of Art, Morley
College, Camberwell School of Art and the Royal College of Art in the UK.
Hubbard received his MFA from the Chelsea School of Art and Design and a
Master of Public Art and Design from the London Institute, both in London,
Professor Hubbard has a thorough knowledge of numerous media and processes
including metals casting and mold-making; blacksmithing; welding; jewelry
casting and fabrication; plastic and fiberglass molding; laminating and
fabrication; wood carving and cabinetmaking; stone carving and letter
carving; latex, plaster, wood mold-making; and silkscreen, lithography and
etching, as well as the general process of photography. While in the UK,
Professor Hubbard served as a printmaking and sculpture consultant for
commercial and individual clients between 1972 and 1998. Some of his
commercial clients in London included Kelpra Studio, Editions Alecto,
Marlborough Fine Arts and Churchill Trust.
Lynne received her Master’s Degree in Art Education from Temple
University and earned sixty additional credits from Temple University, The
University for the Arts and the University of Alaska. Since 2003, she has
been Chair and Professor of Art Education at Moore and had taught as an
adjunct from 1994 to 2002. She was an art teacher in the School District of
Philadelphia from 1966 to 2002, teaching kindergarten through sixth grade.
At both Clymer Elementary School and Loesche Elementary School, she worked
extensively with children with autism, learning disabilities, physical
disabilities, ADD, ADHD and students with cognitive delay. In 1996 as an
adjunct faculty member at Moore, she developed a Special Populations class
for degree students at Moore to have the opportunity to work with children
with special needs.
Because of her deep commitment and leadership in working with students with
special needs, in 2006, Professor Horoschak was the recipient of the
Educators 3E 500 Award from West Chester University for Educational
Excellence and Entrepreneurship. In 1999, she was awarded the Stockton Rush
George Bartol Arts in Education Fellowship and in August Professor Horoschak
was notified that she had received a Pennsylvania Art Education Association
Award for Higher Education that will be formally presented at PAEA’s
convention in October 2008.
Professor Horoschak is actively involved in the field of art education and
among her many accomplishments, has served as a content leader for the
Philadelphia Public School’s Content Institutes on Literacy, Project Based
Education and Integrating the Arts. She has given many presentations and
workshops including most recently Behavior Management in the Art Room for
the Philadelphia in Education Partnership and Best Teaching Practices for
Philadelphia Teaching Artists.
She actively exhibits her artwork, which can be found in the permanent
collection of the Department of Education in Harrisburg. Most recently,
Horoschak has shown her work in Art is Happening: A Celebration of
Philadelphia Artists at The Plastic Club, Philadelphia. She has served on
many boards including the Philadelphia Art Museum Board on the Arts and
Literacy, Woodmere Art Museum Education Board and the Stockton Rush Bartol
Board, for which she served as Vice Chair from 2007 to 2008.
Graduate Programs at Moore
Moore offers three unique new coed graduate programs in Studio Art, Interior
Design and Art Education with an Emphasis in Special Populations starting in
Summer 2009. All three low-residency graduate programs recognize the
critical value of professional exposure and require a field practicum,
internship or international studio residency. The programs emphasize
critical thinking, innovation and the synthesis of theory and practice
equipping candidates with skills sought by employers in today’s creative
economy. Annual symposia featuring guest speakers of national and
international significance focus on contemporary issues in art, education
