YOUNG ARTISTS WORKSHOP

GRADES 9-12

Young artists in High School Classes become part of a community dedicated to developing interests and abilities in a collaborative and exuberant atmosphere. In addition to building a foundation of creative and technical skills, courses foster the development of imagination, self-confidence, and individual style.

  • Classes are Saturdays from 9-12 and 1– 4 pm
  • Students have morning and afternoon breaks as well as supervised lunches for which they may bring their own or purchase in the dining hall.

PORTFOLIO PREPARATION

Are you interested in building a portfolio for college admissions review? Then this class focusing on skill-building exercises in still life, landscape and the human figure – as well as presentation – is for you. Develop a personal vision and learn what is expected in a portfolio.

FASHION ESSENTIALS BOOTCAMP

In this exciting course, you will learn about fashion styles and designers in preparation for fun hands-on assignments forecasting and visualizing fashion trends. Concluding with basic sewing skills, you will be able to combine all you have learned in the construction of a simple garment. A great introduction to Moore’s Fashion Design program!

FASHION SKETCHING

An essential part of becoming a fashion designer is learning to construct your designs on paper. In addition to exploring styles, trends and designers to develop your ideas, projects in this class focus on acquiring drawing skills that are fun and easy to use for creating stylized fashion sketches.

DRAWING ESSENTIALS

Develop the perceptual and pictorial skills that are key to communicating confidently as a visual artist in any field. Using a rich range of media including graphite, charcoal, and conte crayons, you will experience the fun and satisfaction of drawing while learning basic principles related to all art and design.

MANGA ILLUSTRATION & BEYOND

Discover the many variations of Japanese manga while you develop a distinctive story featuring your unique comic characters. Projects include exploring character design, figure invention, page layout, story structure, basic rules of perspective and classic comic book storytelling.

JEWELRY & METALSMITHING

Develop skill and confidence in the basic techniques of fabricating jewelry and small metal sculptures with the goal of creating pieces that are expressive of your individual ideas. Construction and finishing skills include soldering, sawing, drilling, filing, sanding and polishing. Tools are provided.

SCULPTURE STUDIO

Have fun constructing, deconstructing, and altering forms as you work three dimensionally and learn the basic principles of contemporary sculpture. Projects will familiarize you with a variety of expressive materials and techniques for creating unique works of art. 

PAINTING STUDIO

Learn the foundational techniques of painting in a light-filled studio as you explore color and composition to express your ideas about art. Using a range of paint media, you will develop an understanding of the relationship between color and light as you work from observed subjects such as still life and the figure or your imagination.

The foundation of the design process is pattern drafting and garment construction. Learn how to draft and adjust basic sloper patterns, fit muslin or toile, and choose the right fabric for your garment. You and your classmates will show your finished garments during Friends & Family Day.

DIGITAL DRAWING BOARD

Learn to use your computer as a dynamic tool for creating amazing artwork using the potential of vector graphics. Beginning with the use of Illustrator tools to make cartoons and posters, you will experiment with digital drawing and graphics illustration to create original images for screen or print.

EXPRESSIVE PORTRAITURE

Discover the proper methods to render realistic facial likeness and expressions as you work with clothed models to further your observational and figurative drawing skills.

TRADITIONAL ANIMATION

Design original characters and learn how to animate them. Through the process of storyboarding and plot development, you will develop visual storytelling skills based on the principles of traditional animation and discover the possibilities of animation as a career.

Explore a variety of city sights and learn the techniques, skills and principles for finding and capturing life as it happens and telling stories with images. Students should bring a digital camera to the first class.

Use sketching as a design process to develop a collection of accessories including handbags, shoes, and belts. Projects including exploring trends and materials used in the accessories industry, making a finished handbag from your own design, and learning presentation techniques.

DESIGN ESSENTIALS

Become fluent in the language of design using a variety of art media to explore and apply fundamental design elements to projects based on the real world of design from architecture to the simple zipper.  You will learn basic visual expression and problem-solving skills that are directly applicable to any visual arts pursuit plus gain a valuable foundation for a career in the arts.

This dynamic class will introduce you to illustration skills and develop your personal style in creating imaginative visual images for the types of projects that contemporary illustrators practice: comics, children’s books, movie storyboards, skateboard graphics, video games and more.

RAKU CERAMICS

Create forms using wheel throwing and hand building techniques and then fire your ceramic pieces using the exciting ancient Japanese process of Raku, a quick procedure that results in a unique luster and surface.

GAMING DESIGN

Learn design and game development! Through concept sketching, animation and basic programming skills, you will build simple interactive frames. Hands-on projects explore specific game genres including arcade, action and narrative games. Programming experience is not necessary, but you should be computer literate and have some familiarity with Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.

Develop advanced construction skills while creating unique projects with an emphasis on garment draping and embellishment. You will visit a local design studio and show your finished garments during Friends & Family Day. Class size is limited to eight. Prerequisites: Fashion Sewing (Basic Sewing) or Fashion Essentials Boot Camp and Fashion Design & Construction.

FASHION SEWING

Learn to sew like a pro on a variety of fabrics and other materials. Guided projects will include all the basic sewing techniques and an overview of fabric properties needed for success in constructing your own designs. This course is a great first step if you are interested in fashion but not experienced at sewing.

FIGURE DRAWING

Develop strong composition skills and learn to capture the essence of a pose through interpreting the human figure. Short sketches will lead to longer poses and the development of more complete, detailed drawings as you increase your observational skills and understanding of proportion, form and gesture.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Develop skills in creating impressive graphic designs for real world applications such as posters, advertising, multimedia, and online. You will have fun using imagery, color, type and composition to express messages with individual style while learning visual communication principles valuable in many fields.

VIDEO & FILMMAKING

Learn the fundamentals of moviemaking by creating your own short video. Begin by developing an idea for an original story, move on to the shooting process and put it all together as you learn post-production video editing techniques on the computer.

Make the transition from traditional hand-drawn animation techniques to the digital world. A continued emphasis on concept and character development and storyboards will strengthen student skills. A great next step if you have taken traditional animation classes in the past.
