YOUNG ARTISTS WORKSHOP

GRADES 5 - 8

 

Young artists in Classes for Grades 5-8 experience a joyous investigation into a wide range of visual art materials, techniques and ideas. Courses foster a broad understanding of the art and design process and provide a springboard for creative thinking and artmaking.

  • Classes are Saturdays from 9-12 and 1– 4 pm
  • Students have morning and afternoon breaks as well as supervised lunches for which they may bring their own or purchase in the dining hall.
  • Choose according to your fall 2016 grade

ANIME & MANGA

Explore Japanese comics and print cartoons and learn the steps of making anime and manga. Advance your drawing skills by focusing on traditional anime characteristics of facial expression, the figure and creative costumes.


EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN LAB
9 am – 12 pm

Tuition $500
Explore design-based artmaking and develop useful skills in fabrication and craftsmanship. This studio-based class will engage in a series of fascinating 2D and 3D projects based on the elements of design using a wide variety of materials and will provide you with a foundation for any kind of art and design.

DRAWING & PAINTING PHILADELPHIA
1 pm – 4 pm

Develop your drawing and painting skills as well as an appreciation for the richness of Philadelphia’s landscapes with visits to arts and cultural sites. Pencil, charcoal, watercolor and more will be provided for creating initial sketches and expanding into formal drawings and paintings in the studio.


FANTASY ILLUSTRATION

Focus on transforming ideas into creative artwork through a variety of exciting illustration projects that include comics-related subjects, science fiction themes and fantasy landscapes. Emphasis is on exercising the imagination, using writing to enhance fanciful scenes, and experimenting with different materials and techniques.

INTRO TO FIGURE DRAWING

Drawing the human figure is important training for all artists.  By working with a clothed live model, you will develop an understanding of form through increased observation skills. This class offers a good foundation in the basics for beginners and more experienced students.


DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
9 am – 12 pm

Tuition $500
Learn to see the world through the lens of a camera and develop skills for creating exciting photographic images. The class emphasizes both camera functions and picture-taking techniques as students explore themes in still photography. Bring your digital camera to the first class.

 

INTRO TO SCULPTURE

Through a series of innovative exercises, have fun experimenting and building with fiber, clay, paper and wire to create unique three-dimensional forms from your imagination. 


DIGITAL ART & WEB DESIGN

Gain digital design fundamentals through the use of the Adobe Creative Suite and Wacom tablets while learning how to build your own dynamic website. Programming experience is not necessary.
