The panel will examine the art and career of three artists—Ethel V. Ashton, Rhoda Myers Medary, and Alice Neel—who were friends and classmates at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art & Design) in the early 1920s. The discussion will focus on the challenges facing women artists in Philadelphia and the nation at that time, and the decidedly different choices each artist made regarding career, marriage, and family.

Private Artist/Public Life: Ethel V. Ashton

Modernist painter Ethel V. Ashton (1896–1975) studied, worked, and exhibited in Philadelphia, participating fully in the city’s vibrant art scene. This exhibition surveys her career through some forty paintings and works on paper.
Ashton attended the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art and Design) in the early 1920s. She worked for many years as a research librarian at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she mentored young artists and was instrumental in the success of the Fellowship program. Ashton’s work can be found in the collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia, and in the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC.
