How can you alter a space with your art? For this component of the exhibition, Moore alumnae were invited to submit a digital image of an altered or augmented reality that uses their own art (in any medium) in an environment – real or imagined – of their choosing.

The letters, objects, dreams, research, ideas, rituals, art and photos inside the writing desk represent our desire to live in the same mode of curiosity, openness, creativity and collaboration that motivates us to make art. This has grown into a dream, a daily challenge, a guiding force and a source of empowerment for both of us since we began to rub out the boundary between our art and our life in 2010. We write to one another as a way of expanding our perspective beyond that of our current project or immediate environment, and as a means of discovering how our story fits into the ever-evolving human story.
Please take the time to sit down, explore the cubbies and drawers; they are full of our adventures, lessons, struggles and celebrations. Make connections and even add pieces of your own story. If you like, choose one of the blank postcards and write something of your story, dreams, education, perspective, passion. Put it inside the installation somewhere, or if there is someone you would like to send it to, stamp it and put it in the mailbox. (If you would like to send it to us, we love mail! You’ll find our personal addresses many times over in this desk.) The web that each of us explores throughout our lives is also ours to spin. We enrich it with our actions and strengthen it as we forge new connections and understandings.

Carbon Corpus is a project examining environmental issues and alternative economies. The project aims to not only examine behaviors that make less of a carbon footprint, but also to scrutinize and critique the difficulties of achieving this goal in modern society.
I began the project by selling the animal-based carbon credits associated with my own body to investors. In exchange for their purchase, I will eat a vegan diet for the period of time designated by their purchase. For the duration of the project I intend to engage in a dialogue with those who purchase my body’s carbon credits by asking questions, such as: What type of permission do you feel such a purchase grants you? How are you choosing to behave?
In addition to a vegan diet, I will also source my food as locally as possible, either from my own garden or local farmer’s markets.

While participating in the United States Embassy’s Cultural Envoy Program, artist Michelle Angela Ortiz conducted a series of workshops on urban art and the recovery of public spaces in the city of Juárez, Mexico. During a two-week period, Ortiz taught mural painting techniques and led intense community-building activities with local artists and community leaders. The participants were then asked to create writing and images that reflected their response to the floods that destroyed their homes in 2006, as well as their reaction to the waves of violence plaguing their city. From graffiti artists to grandmothers, a total of eighty participants worked diligently and collaboratively to create a mural that depicts the themes of destruction, renovation, violence, change, power, unity, liberty and future. The mural stands as a testimony that, in the midst of destruction and violence, the people of Juárez are committed to creating social change through the arts.
