(Philadelphia, PA) CBS 3 Philadelphia was LIVE at Moore on Wednesday, September 7, when reporter Nicole Brewer aired several segments highlighting dorm room design with four Moore students and Moore alumna Bridget McMullen ’01 of McMullen Design Group LLP.
Bridget, a class of 2001 alumna in interior design, worked with the students in Suite 205 to make some design decisions on their dorm space.
Click here to watch the CBS video of great design ideas Moore students Rachel Costa, Alexandra Campolongo, Spring Paul and Nicole Melnicky have already applied to their space and what Bridget has to add.
Below are some other ideas from Bridget's segment for “back to school” brightening of your living space:
Design Your Sleep
Think outside the standard "Bed In a Bag" - decorate your bed with great pillows, a large queen size duvet and cover. You can find affordable solutions at Homegoods and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
From under-the-bed storage to the closet, clear bins will help you see everything and contain the clutter. Keep like items together and label your containers. This will be helpful during the big beginning and end of the year moves. Featured containers were supplied by The Container Store.
The students were given a refrigerator and microwave. By adding a rack system from The Container Store, Bridget created a gourmet station for preparing and storing foods, utilizing the unused vertical space above the micro-fridge.
Use What You are Not Using
The students said they were not using their desks because they tended to study on their beds, in the library or on the floor. By putting the desks together, Bridget was able to hide the institutional desk under inexpensive shower curtains. She then placed three Ikea desk tops over the curtains extending the desk space by over five feet. The entire transformation cost under $50.
