Chair, Fine Arts and Photography & Digital Arts

I manage the day-to-day operations of the Fine Arts and Photography & Digital Arts programs and also provide vision and direction moving forward. My work as chair is very similar to the process of making my paintings: both are forward-thinking and create new possibilities through incremental steps.

My work has explored the divergent qualities of space by navigating tensions between pictorial space, physical environments, and flatness. I usually start with a broad sense of the image. I lay in a few general areas with spray-paint and then I quickly start working on the small detailed parts. Each painting has a particular logic so I need to change lots of things as I get acquainted with the piece. Detailed painting gives me the opportunity to continuously clarify and adjust on a very small level. 
Studying art changed the way I thought about everything. Once I understood how relationships function, in content and form, my entire worldview shifted. Once I started seeing the connections between ideas and forms, my studio practice really took off. I was very lucky to have teachers who continually pushed me—and I like to think I do the same for my students. What students make engages and transforms the world around them. 
Artists here really get their hands dirty, work together, and make things happen. There are spaces for sharing tools, for sharing technology, and for sharing ideas. There is a sense of real possibility here.
At Moore we work with students in a dimensional way. We teach critical thinking, practice, and hands-on making across liberal arts, studio, and real world practice. We are responsive to our times and the needs of our students.
As an educator I seek to create a space that encourages creativity. The classroom ideally functions as a kind of incubator and I work to encourage, disrupt, and challenge the students so that they continue to critically engage with that space. When something develops in class—a breakthrough—there is a physical sensation of momentum forward. That is the best moment for a teacher.
