Deirdre Breakenridge, author, speaker and CEO of Pure Performance Communications, traveled to Moore on Monday to interview President Cecelia Fitzgibbon about Leadership for her podcast, Women Worldwide. Interviewed by Breakenridge, women around the globe share their incredible stories with a vision to impart wisdom and advice on tackling barriers and soaring to new heights. Each episode receives between 30,000 and 60,000 downloads.
Monday's podcast interview was taped at Moore via Skype in front of a student audience. The students had submitted some of the questions for Fitzgibbon ahead of time. Some of the highlights from Fitzgibbon's interview are as follows:
On building strong relationships:
“Leadership is a relationship. A leader has to have credibility and character for people to trust them. Moore is small so we know everyone by their first name. People then know you are invested in their success."
On failure as part of the leadership learning process:
“You are in college to experiment, take risks and learn from failure. I’ve learned more from my failures than from my successes. Taking risks is part of growing.”
On tackling inner fears:
“People should have two networks - a fan club where you can do no wrong. These people love you and make you feel better. Then you should have a professional network. People who see in you what others don’t see. They spur you on. They don’t coddle you.”
On how to manage a busy life with a leadership role:
“Look for useful and strategic ways to spend your time and pursue what is most important. What is the most important next step and how are you spending your time to get there?”
On being open to criticism:
“I have critics in my life. They are the same people who love me. I trust them well enough to receive criticism. When criticism is due, you take it. It will help in the long run.”
