Beginning today, April 15, 2013, this blog will document the lives of two first-year undergraduates, Kathleen “Kit” Kazmier and Flor “Jazmin” Gutierrez,” and their four years at Moore College of Art & Design to see where their journeys take them.

KIT graduated from Jackson Liberty High School in Jackson, New Jersey with high honors.  While there she was the Assistant Art Editor for the Literary Magazine, Student Head of the Club and Art Department and a member of the National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society for which she served as Vice President in 2012.

Before coming to Moore, she had this to say about the college: “This school is everything I was looking for. I wanted a college in the heart of a city. Some place other than where I grew up, but I was afraid of large classes and a large campus. Moore’s single building and small, tight-knit classes were exactly what I was hoping for. Going to the Open House simply made me want to go to Moore. The teachers seemed so good-hearted, like they really cared about what they do and about their students. I cannot explain it all - it just feels right when I think about myself in the halls of Moore.”

Originally from Guatemala and living in New Jersey, JAZMIN attended Bound Brook High School in Brook, where she was a member of the Interact Club and the editor of the Yearbook Club in 2012.

Here are her thoughts about Moore before arriving: “I want to become an art teacher and Moore seems like a good college to begin my path on the road to becoming one.  I have wanted to be an art teacher since childhood.  Although I was unable to attend extra art classes other than those offered at my school, I made the most of those opportunities to develop a portfolio. I also invested much time and energy into keeping up with academics, volunteer work and other extracurricular activities.  I am proud to be ranked as one of the top ten students at my high school. While attending college, I would like to continue to participate in clubs and activities along with the academic curriculum.”

Kit is featured first in the slide show below and Jazmin is second.

Kit was the first place recipient of the Frieda Fehrenbacher Foundation Award, which she received at the Honors Convocation on April 12, 2013.  Above are two of her Foundation art pieces featured in the 2013 Student Show.
