Program Specific Requirements

MA IN ART EDUCATION WITH EMPHASIS IN SPECIAL POPULATIONS

  • BFA in Art Education with Certification (Exceptions will be made in some cases for those with a BA or BS in Art Education without certification with significant teaching experience, or a BFA not in Art Education with significant teaching experience)
  • Prior teaching experience is preferred but not required
  • Digital portfolio* (formatted in PowerPoint) of recent artwork consisting of 10 to 15 images demonstrating the applicant’s studio practice
  • Academic or professional writing sample (minimum of 3 pages) demonstrating use of citations and references

MA IN ART EDUCATION WITH CERTIFICATION (CONCURRENT PROGRAM)

  • Bachelor’s degree in the visual arts with a 3.0 minimum GPA.  All transcripts will be evaluated by the Admissions Office to determine eligibility of previous coursework
    • 43.5 studio art credit hours
    • 15.0 credit hours of art history, including 3.0 credits outside the western tradition
    • 3.0 credit hours of digital imaging or working experience equivalent
    • 6.0 credit hours of English
  • Digital portfolio*(formatted in PowerPoint) of recent artwork consisting of 10 to 15 images demonstrating the applicant’s studio practice

MA IN ART & SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited institution
  • Expanded statement of intent that includes a proposal related to the type of inquiry and investigation in art & social engagement the candidate wishes to pursue
  • Academic or professional writing sample (minimum of 3 pages) demonstrating use of citations and references

MFA IN COMMUNITY PRACTICE

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in any discipline of studio, visual or fine arts, and have completed a minimum of 15 art history credits
  • Expanded statement of intent that includes a proposal related to the type of inquiry and investigation in community practice the candidate wishes to pursue
  • Digital portfolio* of recent creative work consisting of 15-20 images, which can be in the form of multimedia pieces and/or web-based content and should demonstrate a mature and focused body of work

MFA IN INTERIOR DESIGN 

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited institution
  • Digital portfolio of 10 to 15 pieces of original artwork by the applicant including:
    • A minimum of 2 observation drawings of interior spaces
    • At least three pieces in any medium that show the applicant’s interest in the built environment (buildings, interiors, objects or streetscapes)
    • Drawings or other media (collage, painting, sculpture, constructions) that show the applicant’s range of ability
    • Architectural drawings are not required for the portfolio but applicants who have some previous drafting experience or classes in interior design and architecture should include plans, sections, elevations and perspectives
  • Academic or professional writing sample (minimum of 3 pages) demonstrating use of citations and references

MFA IN STUDIO ART Program

  • Bachelors Degree in the visual arts or a bachelor’s degree in another field with the completion of 15 art history credits
  • Digital portfolio* of recent artwork consisting of 15 to 20 images demonstrating a mature and focused body of work

*Acceptable format for portfolios include:

  • Images: PowerPoint, PDF, or JPEGS on a CD, USB or shared through DropBox
  • Video: MOV, VMW, OR FLV on a CD, USB or shared through DropBox
  • URL to a personal website (the portfolio must be easy to identify and locate)   
  • Inventory including titles, dates, media, dimensions, and specific responsibilities on group projects should be included in PDF
