Moore Congratulates 2013 Jump/Start Winners

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Moore College of Art & Design congratulates the four winning designers of Re-Tulled, the 18th Annual Jump/Start Fashion Show held on October 1, 2013.

Traditionally the first fashion show of the new school year, the students had to devise, design and showcase a garment based on the theme in just one month’s time.

As a tribute to the Pennsylvania Ballet’s 50th Anniversary, Moore fashion design junior and senior students were tasked with using tulle in a contemporary design with a reference to its use in ballet. Tulle has been used for ballet costumes over the years as it has the ability to flow with the music and movement of the dancer’s bodies.

Best Use of Tulle: Michelle Kye
Most Creative Design: Angela Chu
Honorable Mention: Emily Oluoch
Most Wearable Design: Katie Magno

“It was so great to collaborate with the Pennsylvania Ballet and celebrate their 50th anniversary,” said Janice Lewis, chair of fashion design. “The student designs were outstanding – amazing silhouettes, color and design. Students explored the properties of tulle and used the fabrication in ways that the ballet has never seen! I loved the way the garments ‘danced’ down the runway!”

Judges for this year’s Jump/Start Fashion Show included Kaytie Johnson, director and chief curator, The Galleries at Moore; Dominique Streater ’10, a finalist on Project Runway Season 12; Barbara Vodges, manager of special events for the Pennsylvania Ballet; and Jane Likens ’66, Mid-Atlantic Regional President for the Costume Society of America.

Once again this year, the fashion department partnered with Career Wardrobe, a community-based nonprofit organization serving women transitioning into the workforce by providing professional attire. Those attending Jump/Start brought new and gently used women’s apparel for donation to Career Wardrobe.

If you missed the show, Selections from Jumpstart will be on view in the Wilson Gallery from October 19, 2013 – January 11, 2014.
