SCREENING NIGHT FAQS

What time do the screenings start?

Screenings begin at dusk (approximately 8:00 pm), and will take place in Aviator Park, in between Moore College of Art & Design and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.  

What should I bring? 

Picnic materials, lawn chairs, food, non-alcoholic beverages, blankets, and your friends are our suggestions.

Do you sell food and beverages? 

A rotating roster of Philadelphia food trucks will be on hand at each screening, serving up a variety of tasty treats from 7-10pm.  

What is not allowed? 

You may not bring grills, knives, or alcoholic beverages.  

What is there to do before the screenings begin? 

Please visit the exhibitions on view in The Galleries at Moore, which will be open until 9pm during screenings. The Galleries are always free, and open to everyone. 

What happens in the case of inclement weather?

For rain days, films will be screened in Moore’s Stewart Auditorium at 8pm. The weather decision will be made by 5pm the day of each screening. Check our Twitter page @MooreGalleries or call 215-965-4027 to confirm. 

Are the films and videos family-friendly? 

Because the films and videos are unrated, viewer discretion is advised.   

 

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When is the deadline for the 2014 Festival? 

April 31, 2014. Submissions must be postmarked or submitted online by 11:59 PST on the deadline date to be eligible. 

What are the different film & video submission categories I can enter for the 2014 Festival?

Narrative Feature (41 minutes or longer)

Documentary Feature (41 minutes or longer)

Narrative Short (40 minutes or less)

Animated Short (40 minutes or less)

Documentary Short (40 minutes or less)

Films and/or videos with a total running time over 41 minutes are considered a feature film. Films and/or videos 40 minutes or less are considered short films. This rule is strictly observed. 

Can I submit more than one film and/or video in a single category? 

Yes! You can submit as many films and/or videos as you want. Please be sure to complete separate entry forms. 

Is there an entry fee? 

No! Submitting your film and/or video is completely free! 

Do I need to list all the writers/filmmakers involved on the entry form? Should I list other people as co-writer/director/etc. on the application? 

That is for you to settle with your collaborators.

My film or video already has distribution. Am I still eligible to submit to the competition? 

Films with U.S. distribution (obtained prior to being selected for Film al Fresco 2014) or films produced, financed or initiated by a major film studio or television network are ineligible for competition. Films that have been shown on U.S. network or cable television or distributed to theaters prior to the screening dates are also ineligible for competition. 

What should I include with my submission? 

Along with the entry form (whether it's submitted online or sent via post), all we need is a single copy of the film and/or video. We accept submissions online through file transfer services such as Dropbox or WeTransfer – share to galleries@moore.edu – or through Vimeo (video must be available for download and shared with our username The Galleries at Moore) or hard copy via post. We request that you do not send any extra materials such as promotional materials, photos or press kits, as we will not keep anything other than the DVD. If sending via post, please label your DVD with the title and runtime. 

What formats do you accept for submission? 

Films must be submitted one of three ways: 1) send a standard DVD-R/DVD+R disc via post to The Galleries at Moore, attn: Film al Fresco, 20th St. and The Parkway, Philadelphia, PA  19103. 2) submit your  .flv, .mp4, .avi, or .mov file digitally via online transfer clients such as Dropbox or WeTransfer – these files must be under 2GB. – shared to galleries@moore.edu. 3) share your video with us on Vimeo – video must be eligible for download via our username The Galleries at Moore. We cannot accept Blu-Ray, Beta, HD-Cam, Mini-DV or anything that cannot be played on a standard DVD player. Please be sure to label your DVD or digital file with the film’s title and run time.  

What are my options for uploading my film or video digitally? 

You can share your  .flv, .mp4, .avi, and .mov files with us digitally by using online file transfer clients such as Dropbox or WeTransfer (share to galleries@moore.edu) or via your Vimeo account ­– video must be eligible for download to our user account name The Galleries at Moore (galleries@moore.edu). 

How can I receive notification that my film or video has been submitted? 

Include a self-addressed, stamped postcard for each submission if you wish acknowledgment of the receipt of your entry. Digital submissions will be acknowledged via email.

Must I have obtained all rights for music and other copyrighted material in my film or video? 

Yes. While we will not investigate these clearances, we will also not be held responsible for any copyright infringements.

When will I hear about results? 

The selected films will be announced a month prior to the date of the first screening of the 2014 series. Filmmakers will be notified regarding the status of their film by mid-May at the latest. 

Will my film or video submission be returned? 

DVDs and press materials will not be returned under any circumstances. We simply do not have the staff nor storage space to organize and return entries, EVEN if a self-addressed mailer is included. 

Can I send in a new/better/color-corrected/shorter/longer cut? 

Possibly. If the film or video has already been viewed by members of our selection committee, we cannot guarantee it will be re-watched. Technical changes will likely not affect the judgment of a panelist. Unless it is something you cannot live with, it’s best to trust your initial submission. If the film or video is selected for screening, you will have ample opportunity to supply us with the most recent version beforehand.

What if the DVD I send you doesn’t play? 

Please try your DVD on several machines before you send it, on both traditional DVD players and computers. If at all possible, format your DVD so that the film starts playing as soon as it is in the player/computer [this is called FIRST PLAY], and avoid menus and trailers. If we cannot get the film to play on our end, we will contact you for a new copy.
